Mechanical / Naval Engineer – Marine Systems Development

blueOASIS is a young and fast-growing company focusing on developing sustainable solutions for ocean protection. blueOASIS is working on four scopes: numerical analysis for offshore renewables, ships and platforms, underwater acoustics, smart ocean modelling and sensorization, and AI-based digital twinning. Our flagship product is Hydrotwin, a disruptive Ocean Digital Twin platform (https://www.blueoasis.tech/hydrotwin).

We are now looking for a proactive Mechanical / Naval Engineer with experience in mechanical design, materials, and manufacturing processes to join our engineering team and contribute to the development of innovative marine technologies and systems.

Role Description

We are seeking a technically strong

Mechanical / Naval Engineer

to join our engineering team, working at the intersection of mechanical design, marine engineering, prototyping, and system development. The candidate will contribute to the design, development, manufacturing, and testing of mechanical systems and structures for marine applications, including both static and dynamic assemblies. Working closely with multidisciplinary engineering teams, the candidate will help develop robust, reliable, and efficient solutions for operation in challenging marine environments, combining mechanical engineering principles, materials knowledge, and practical manufacturing expertise.

Main Responsibilities

Design and develop mechanical systems, structures, and components for marine and underwater applications.

Contribute to the development of static and dynamic mechanical assemblies, including mechanisms, actuated systems, and moving components.

Design and develop marine structures and floating systems, considering stability, structural integrity, and environmental loads.

Produce 3D CAD models, technical drawings, assembly documentation, and manufacturing specifications.

Select appropriate materials, components, and manufacturing processes, considering mechanical performance, corrosion resistance, durability, and cost.

Support prototyping and manufacturing activities, including 3D printing, CNC machining, and conventional machining processes.

Perform mechanical calculations and engineering assessments related to structural behaviour, loads, dynamics, and mechanical performance.

Participate in the assembly, integration, testing, and validation of mechanical prototypes and systems.

Identify and resolve mechanical design, manufacturing, and integration challenges.

Work with multidisciplinary teams to ensure the compatibility of mechanical systems with electronic, sensing, and control components.

Contribute to the continuous improvement of mechanical designs, manufacturing workflows, and system reliability.

Prepare technical documentation and report on design progress, testing results, and engineering developments.

Expertise Needed

Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Naval Architecture, Marine Engineering, or a related field.

Strong knowledge of mechanical design principles, including statics, dynamics, mechanisms, and structural behaviour.

Practical experience with 3D CAD software such as Onshape, SolidWorks, Rhino, FreeCAD, Fusion 360, Inventor, Siemens NX, or equivalent.

Knowledge of engineering materials, including metals, polymers, composites, and their mechanical properties.

Understanding of manufacturing processes, including 3D printing, CNC machining, conventional machining, and mechanical assembly.

Experience in mechanical component design, dimensioning, tolerancing, and preparation of technical drawings.

Ability to perform mechanical calculations and assess loads, stresses, deformation, and dynamic behaviour.

Practical problem-solving skills and the ability to translate engineering concepts into functional prototypes.

Strong organisational and communication skills, with good written and spoken English.

Authorisation to work in Portugal.

Added Value (two of any of these skills are needed)

Experience designing mechanical systems for marine or underwater environments.

Knowledge of corrosion, waterproofing, sealing solutions, and material compatibility in marine environments.

Experience with floating structures, buoyancy, stability, or hydrodynamic principles.

Experience with motor-driven mechanisms, actuators, transmissions, bearings, and mechanical power systems.

Experience with finite element analysis (FEA), computational fluid dynamics (CFD), or other engineering simulation tools.

Hands-on experience with prototyping, 3D printing, CNC machining, or workshop equipment.

Knowledge of design for manufacturing and assembly (DFMA).

Experience integrating mechanical systems with electronics, sensors, or control systems.

Experience with field testing, marine equipment deployment, or oceanographic campaigns.

Basic knowledge of programming, Linux, or Git.
